The Bouba and Kiki effect, 95 to 98 percent of people will identify these two shapes by the correct name.

Synesthesia is a condition in which the senses are linked or "crosswired" For an example, a given person my "see" the color yellow when they hear the word Wednesday, or "taste" chocolate when they hear a train. It could be argued that the k...iki and bouba effect is an example of synesthesia. In 95, to 98% of cases, people have identified the name kiki to the sharp , angular shape, and bouba to the rounded shape. The results were exactly the same for the hearing impaired. Even children as young as 2 1/2 have identified these shapes the same way.
ReplyDeleteA parallel can be drawn between the two in that the mind seemingly automatically assigns the shape to a name, or the name to a shape, as the case may be. In the other cases of Synesthesia, the mind is producing a taste for a sound heard, or a color for a word spoken or read. In either case the mind is taking one sense, and triggering a manifest of sight, smell, touch, taste etc.. Very cool exercise!
Very cool. This is sort of like this test for synesthesia. Not necessarily a test for synesthetic projection, but definitely interesting for synesthetic association. Good stuff.
